PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £40,200 to £69,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
When much of the UK is asleep there is a thriving community of listeners who want to be kept informed and relish companionship, from key workers to people living alone. Stories that will shape the next day are already unfolding. Based in Birmingham we are looking for an exceptional Senior Broadcast Journalist to help lead and produce overnight programming across BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Nations and BBC Local Radio.

As a Senior Broadcast Journalist, you will play a key editorial role in planning and delivering overnight output across multiple networks and services.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
- Leading and producing live overnight radio programming on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings.
- Making editorial decisions in a fast-moving news environment.
- Identifying and developing original stories and treatments.
- Responding confidently to breaking news and major events.
- Ensuring output meets BBC Editorial Guidelines and legal standards.
- Supporting and developing colleagues within the production team.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
- Understanding of how to get the best from a team and the presenter
- Significant experience in broadcast journalism.
- Proven experience producing live radio or audio output.
- Strong editorial judgement and understanding of media law.
- Excellent communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to make calm and effective decisions under pressure. A strong commitment to fairness, accuracy, and impartiality.
DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
- Experience of producing Overnight live output
