Guide to navigating Job Boards, LinkedIn, and Recruitment Agencies

It’s important to choose wisely when considering which job boards or careers platforms you register yourself with. Of course, you should check that they have the relevant roles you would be seeking, but also that they provide the right kind of information (salary, role responsibilities), and have inclusive, accessible job descriptions.

Job Boards 💻

Our advice on how to use job boards as efficiently as possible:

  • Register all your details, ensuring you include as much information in your profile as you can. Talent Acquisition teams will have access to search job seekers profiles for any open positions.
  • Choose preferences by the filters – this will allow you to receive alerts of new roles being posted. Think about what types of Industry would interest you, relevant job titles, and locations. Or leave it more open if you are flexible on what your next opportunity looks like.
  • Continually update your profile, adding new skills or requirements for your next role.
  • Always ensure your most up-to-date CV is attached, so when you click to apply for the role, you are giving yourself the best chance of being considered by the hiring manager.
  • Think about what key words you can include on your profile and CV attached, any that are relevant to what you have done previously or what you are ideally seeking.

Navigating LinkedIn 🔦

LinkedIn is a really important tool for recruiters and job seekers alike. It’s become almost unavoidable for today’s professionals, and we recommend leaning into it. Recruiters will frequently use the platform as a search base for open roles, so keeping your profile up-to-date with work experience, skills, and content is essential.

Our best practice advice:
  • LinkedIn can be a very useful space to raise your profile and build a network of contacts which can be pivotal when searching for a new role.
  • Talent Acquisition teams will also have access when looking for people to join their organisations.
  • Include a clear and interesting opening statement under your name. This helps people quickly understand a little more about you, especially when sifting through large volumes of profiles.
  • You can also include your current role/field of work or an area you seeking a role in. Think about how you can make yourself stand out!
  • Have an engaging ‘About’ section, including painting a picture of who you are and what you have experience in.
  • Have your roles laid out with employment dates starting with your current role – ideally with a few duties under each role. Think of key words which recruiters may search for linked to your experience, as well as any relevant key words for roles you may be seeking.
  • Update your skills section, include as many as possible. There is a skills test that you can take to evidence these.
  • Ask your connections to endorse your skills, this can verify your skilset to a potential employer or recruiter.

Using Recruitment Agencies 🔍

Recruitment agencies can be daunting whilst on your job search, but we would recommend trialling some out, after careful evaluation of their ethos.

From our lengthy experience within the recruitment industry, we have collated our recommendations below.

  • Align yourself with an agency and people who have your best interests at heart – read reviews and testimonials from other job seekers to determine this.
  • Some agencies operate with integrity, however, not all do unfortunately!
  • Be mindful of who you register with and where you give your details.
  • Always ensure you speak with them in person or over the phone to confirm which roles align with your search, and who you consent to having your information shared with.
  • Be mindful that once you have registered your details with an agency, they may contact many employers on your behalf with little discernment. This can give the impression to hiring managers that you are seeking any job, when perhaps you are focussed on a specific type of role in a specific type of industry.
  • This could possibly discredit you and your search, so be careful who you give your details to.
  • Partnering with the right recruitment agency will secure you support, guidance, advice and an impartial contact to help ensure you make the right next move in your career journey.

When you're looking for your next role, it's a good idea to mix and match the methods mentioned above while making yourself as visible as possible to hiring managers and relevant organisations.
